How to install the Adventure Series hardshell roof tent

Learn how to set up and install your Adventure Series roof top tent. Supplied with your roof tent are printed instructions but before your tent arrives it’s helpful to know how simple the setup really is. For this guide and the majority of our customers, the setup will be on roof bars. If you have a roof rack you may still be able to use the clamping plates provided but it does depend on the type of rack system. However, if you can’t use the clamps then you will need to drill mounting holes, see our how does a roof tent attach page for more information. Read on for our roof tent installation step-by-step.

Step 1

Unbox your roof top tent

To start the roof tent installation, carefully unbox your roof tent from the protective cardboard box. If using a knife to cut the box open, be careful not to cut the actual tent itself when opening.

Lay the roof tent down, cut straps and lift off the cardboard box top. Remove any other packaging and lift the roof tent out of the bottom half of the cardboard box.

Step 2

Open the roof tent

With the roof tent on its base, unclasp the two clips and then partially open the tent to remove the tent parts.

Remove everything from inside the roof tent, (this will make it lighter to lift!). Once you have removed everything, carefully close the roof tent and close the clips to secure the roof tent.

Step 4

Install cargo bar feet

If you not are installing cargo bars, go to Step 5. To install the cargo bars, insert 2 x M8 nuts into the top channel on the side of the roof tent.

Place a cargo bar foot in position with the 2 nuts behind. Using the provided Allen key, secure in place with 2 M8 Allen cap bolts. you will notice  do not over tighten. Repeat on the opposite side so the feet are aligned opposite each other.

Attach cargo bars to feet

Insert 2 x M8 20mm bolts into the channel on the underside of the cargo bar, one each end to align with bar feet. Place the cargo bar onto the feet and secure the bar with a penny washer and M8 nylon nut.

Repeat this process with the other cargo bar and tighten all M8 nylon nuts with a 13mm spanner until secure, do not over tighten.

NOTE: Make sure to add some grease to the threads to help with tightening and undoing.

Step 5

Decide on position and lift onto your car's roof

Before lifting it onto your car’s roof, decide the direction you want the tent to open. The hinged side is the direction the tent will open and overhang. The mounting rails should be perpendicular to the bars they will mount to.

Once you have decided your position, grab a friend and carefully lift the tent into place. Be sure not to hurt yourself, your friend, your car or your new roof tent!

Step 6

Assemble and position sliding plates

Assemble the 8 x aluminium sliding plates and 8 x M8 50mm bolts. Insert sliding plates into the mounting rail underneath the roof tent, on either side of the roof bars at the 4 mounting locations.

NOTE – If the sliders are hard to slide along the mounting channel, lubricate and file down the slider sides slightly.

Step 7

Clamp roof tent to your roof bars

Place the steel mounting plate up against the roof bar and thread on an M8 washer and nylon nut onto protruding M8 bolts. Tighten with the 13mm spanner until secure but do not overtighten. Once all bolts have been tightened, check that the roof tent doesn’t move and is secure.

Check all the mounting bolts and brackets periodically during the use of your roof tent to ensure they are securely fastened to your rack system.

NOTE: Make sure to add some grease to the threads to help with tightening and undoing.
