What is a car awning?

Car awnings are an essential accessory for any road trip or camping adventure. Designed to attach easily to your vehicle’s roof bars or roof racks, these vehicle awnings provide a convenient and sheltered space next to your car, perfect for protecting you from the sun or rain.

Available in various sizes, easy to use, car side awnings offer a practical solution to extend your living space and provide shade or cover while maintaining easy access to your vehicle. The awning is typically supported by a durable aluminium frame, with legs and pegged guide ropes to ensure stability, making it a reliable addition to any overlanding or camping setup.

What size awning to buy?

Below are our vehicle side awning size suggestions. These suggestions should give you an idea of what size awning to use on your car. Vehicle requirements vary and an awning can be mounted at any 2 points along its length due to the continuous twin channels on the back face. So just measure how long your vehicle is and the area you want to cover. However, make sure not to have too much overhang from your vehicle, as this can be a hazard to other road users while driving.

Why choose our side awnings?

Fabric/Canvas

Our awnings are designed to be lightweight but durable. All canvas, including walls, windbreaks and extensions are all made from strong flexible 500D 280GSM rip-stop Oxford polyester. This material is waterproof, mould resistant and provides 100% UV protection. Consequently, this hard-wearing material will be essential on your expedition trip or camping getaway.

Materials

All materials used in our vehicle awnings have the same attention to detail. Heavy-duty thick canvas outer bag for storing will protect your awning while travelling and will stop water ingress or dirt from the road. The frame of our awnings are rigid lightweight anodised aluminium poles, designed to be strong but flexible in wind.

We use durable guide ropes for securing your awning in windy weather, plus 2 heavy-duty aluminium pegs, no cheap flimsy pegs here! We also use premium quality zippers for extra durability on the trail.

Fitting

All Tent & Trail awnings come equipped with a full fitting kit (bolts, brackets, and even tools) with detailed instructions on how to fit to your vehicle.

While specific fitting requirements vary per vehicle, our awnings are designed for maximum flexibility. They can be securely mounted at any point along the back plate, thanks to the continuous twin M8 channels. To ensure the perfect fit, simply measure your vehicle’s roof length and select your ideal awning size from our collection.

Side awning walls

The front and side walls for the car side awning are a great complementary accessory. They are quick to set up and come with their own carry bag, guy ropes, peg and canvas clamps.

The wall fits into place via a Kedor strip on the front and velcro straps along the side. Each awning wall features multiple pegging points in the bottom corners for securing it to the ground. The awning side wall is made of rugged 320g polyester Oxford canvas, which is fully waterproof, UV and mould resistant

Side awning rooms or tents

The awning room or awning tent for the vehicle side awning is the perfect accessory for weather protection and added privacy. Whether from the sun, wind, rain or just a bit of privacy in camp, the awning room fits neatly underneath your existing side awning.

Each room has several windows and doors to allow light, ventilation and easy access. The external windows and doors have bug netting and zip-down curtains for privacy and weather-proofing. The internal door facing your vehicle can be unzipped and tied up for easy access from inside the awning room.

Yes, all our awnings are crafted with 100% waterproof Ripstop Polyester Oxford fabric. This premium-grade fabric is not only waterproof but also UV and mould-resistant, ensuring your awning stays in excellent condition and looks great, no matter the weather.

The awning’s frame and legs are constructed from sturdy aluminium, while the fixings are made of rust-proof stainless steel. This combination guarantees long-lasting durability and reliable performance, giving you peace of mind during every adventure.

Designed for both style and functionality, our awnings are built to handle the unpredictable UK weather while offering you reliable shelter on all your outdoor journeys.

Yes, our vehicle awnings are designed to handle rain, but it’s crucial to position the awning correctly to ensure water runs off effectively. To prevent heavy rainfall from pooling on the canopy fabric, lower one of the front legs slightly more than the other. This simple adjustment allows rainwater to run off the front side of the awning canopy, protecting it from potential damage caused by pooling.

However, in extreme weather conditions, we highly recommend taking down your awning and packing it away. This precaution helps prevent unnecessary strain or damage to your awning, ensuring it stays in top condition for your next adventure.

Our vehicle awnings are designed for effortless installation and come with a complete fitting kit, including bolts, brackets, and even tools, to make the process as simple as possible. To ensure long-lasting performance, all fixings are crafted from premium stainless steel 304-grade metal, providing exceptional resistance to corrosion and rust while adding extra durability and strength.
